When we were in Berlin, we were mapping out our upcoming travels and thought that it made sense to visit Munich then, since we were in the area. As it turned out, they were in the midst of a small festival called Oktoberfest (you may have heard of it!) and unless we wanted to sleep in a tent for $90/night, there was nowhere in the city to stay! So, we decided on a different route and ended up arriving in Munich the day after Oktoberfest ended.
As far as I can tell though, the party in Munich never ends! We had a great time seeing the sights in the city and learned a lot about its history on a 3-hour walking tour. The next day, we bought a one-day Bavaria train pass and made the most of it! First we rode an hour north of the city to visit the Audi headquarters and museum in Ingolstadt. From there, we went back through Munich and rode 2 hours southwest to Fussen to see Neuschwanstein Castle (the inspiration for Sleeping Beauty's castle at Disneyworld). It was a lot to do in one day, but we were glad we got to see so much of the beautiful Bavarian countryside.
Statue of King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria (according to our tour guide, the beer cans in his hand are removed by cleaning crews every Sunday night, but reappear in his hand every Monday morning!):
